“Earthquake Risk in Delhi and Possible Management "
Dr. Jagbir Singh
Abstract:
India is a big country and having multi-hazard risk but Delhi is one of the Maga-Cities of
the world with population of 10 million and has been projected to become the second largest
city in India by the year 2025. Both politically and economically, Delhi is one of the most
important cities in our country and its ability to with stand disasters is of critical importance
to the entire country. Delhi faces severe earthquake hazard due to its vicinity to the
tectonically active Himalayan region. The population of Delhi is just over 17 million people,
making it the second largest city in India. An earthquake disaster in Delhi has the potential to
go well which also happens to be a major commercial and industrial centre will have huge
economical and political implications which will affect the entire country and not just the
population of Delhi. This adds an extra dimension to an earthquake problem for Delhi. The
Chamoli earthquake (1999) effects in Delhi indicate that there is real possibility of a large
earthquake in the Himalaya causing considerable damage to Delhi. . Most importantly, we
need the political will to handle this problem and the biggest challenge perhaps lies in
drawing the attention of political leadership to this problem while the city faces many other
urgent problems as well otherwise the day is not far when we will see the huge disaster by
earthquake in Delhi and the Indian Government is not prepared so far.
