The Tripartite Division of Indian History: Progressive or Retrogressive?
Vivek Mohan
Abstract:
A systematic study of the Indian past has said to begin with the coming of British in India.
It is evident that the study of history of the ancient past and medieval era has become
central to those forces who claimed to be driven by the forces of modernity, rationality,
progressiveness and scientific temperament but proved to be more and more retrogressive,
backward facing, irrational and unscientific. In order to hold and maintain its colonial
hegemony over the colonized people, the administrative apparatus turned to understand
Indian religions, traditions, people, customs and behaviour through their academic
endeavors. Most of the writings credited British colonialism to initiate modern, democratic,
secular and rational attitudes in India but in reality, as this paper will probe into a number
of un-modern approaches to view Indian past, medieval age and the modern era that
highlighted the history in such a way that created many problems in front of the modern. In
fact, James Mill type of history-writings, across the years, adopted gleefully by both
imperialist, nationalists that have contained more problems than solutions. In fact, such
divisions seem unprofessional, un-scientific, and un-historic and required to be abandoned
by the scholars, which would pave the way for writing a ‘neutral’ and unbiased history of
the human kind
