Gender differences in oral health perceptions and practices among school going children
Keerthi Mandumula, Dr.Padma Vijayakumar
Abstract:
Oral health is an important feature of an individual’s overall health and general well-being. Poor oral health has several adverse effects including inadequate food intake, cardiovascular diseases and respiratory infections. The study was conducted to underline the marked gender based differentials in response to the general oral health status and oral hygiene practices. A total of 100 respondents comprising of 50 boys and 50 girls were selected for the study. The findings reveal that majority (39%) of the respondents were in the age group of 12-13years, studying in 7-8 th standard (36%), higher percent (60%) having one sibling, first ordinal position (53%) with 81% residing in the urban areas. Gender differences were found to be statistically significant with respect to self-perception of teeth (χ2=16.11*), gums (χ2=20.11*), experience of pain in the mouth (χ2=11.13*), dental caries (χ2=16.93*) and bad breath (χ2=8.34*). In view of the findings of the study, it can be concluded that oral health awareness programs should be promoted at the school level, since most of the dental problems can be prevented by behavioral changes.

ORGANOLEPTIC EVALUATION OF BUCKWHEAT (Fagopyrum esculentum) BAR
Siriguppa Sneha, Padma Vijayakumar
Abstract:
Buckwheat is one of the unrecognized and underutilized cereal grains which has many functional components. Due to rapid urbanization, life style and diet diversification, the demand for convenience foods is increasing. Consumers look for variety and handy snacks which are nutrient dense and healthy. Buckwheat was utilized in making nutribar due to its health promoting value. A preliminary survey was conducted on nutribars to assess the demand, preference and to know the awareness on the existence of this pseudo cereal. A standard nutribar recipe was formulated with most commonly used ingredients such as oats, almonds, peanuts, rice flakes, sugar and jaggery. Food product development and their acceptability appraisal through organoleptic evaluation were carried out by semi trained and untrained panel comprising of 21 panelists from the Department of Food Science and Nutrition, Mount Carmel College, Bengaluru. A sensory form along with standard written form of instructions were given to panelists and were asked to rate the bars (coded as 101-110) according to a 9-point hedonic scale consisting of preference ratings. Nutribars a popular snack were developed by incorporating varying proportions of buckwheat. All products were moderately acceptable except the product in which 25 % of buckwheat was added which was more acceptable than the standard and other variations which had a mean over all acceptability of 7.7286+0.8. When analyzed statistically, it was also found that there existed a significant difference at 1% level in the overall acceptability among the products formulated. Further, the product was evaluated for its nutritional composition and shelf life. The study therefore recognizes the potential incorporation of buckwheat in the formulation of variety of convenience foods owing to its nutritional composition and organoleptic properties. This nutri rich snack can be given for the children in developmental phase, malnourished children and for the people who are involved in intense energy activity like sports personnel’s

ARCHITECTURE OF INTERIOR; THE ROLE AND HUMAN PERCEPTION OF ART AND ARTEFACT.
Francis Okeke .O, Sylvester C. Onoh, Nicholas Obi
Abstract:
Interior design is the art and science of understanding people's behaviour to create functional spaces within a building. However decorations is the furnishing or adorning of a space with fashionable or beautiful things. Meaning that, interior designers may decorate, but decorators do not design. The use of arts and artefacts as decorative elements and interior furnishes dates back to the ages of man‟s early development of houses for shelters. He brings home beautiful carvings and bones and places them in his interior space, some being hung on walls; their interiors were put together instinctively as a part of the process of building. Our study aims at exploring the use of arts and artefacts as veritable elements and tools for interior furnishing. A structured questionnaire was prepared and distribute to assess students view and perceptions on the satisfaction derived from use of art and artefact for interiors spaces. The study also utilises a field survey to see were these elements have been practically used or installed and its effect to the space. It reveals that for an interior space to be exciting and heavily visited/used it needs rich embodiment of features of art and artefacts. It concludes that rich interior spaces are always associated with art works.

SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF GRAPHENE: ITS ELECTRICAL PROPERTIES FOR APPLICATION IN SOLAR CELL
E. R. ONWUGHALU, A.D.A ABDUL
Abstract:
Graphene, a one-atom thick layer of graphite with a two-dimensional sp2-hybridized carbon network, has recently attracted tremendous research interest due to its peculiar properties such as good mechanical strength, high thermal conductivity, superior transparency, large specific surface area and exceptional charge transport properties. Accelerating global energy consumption makes the development of clean and renewable alternative energy sources important. This research focuses on beneficiation of graphite using flotation separation techniques, and synthesis of graphene via electrochemical exfoliation technique, its characterization and measurements to investigate electrical properties of graphene. The obtained films of graphene were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to examine the size, shape and morphology of graphene, while X-ray Diffraction (XRD) will be used to determine the degree of orientation and interlayer spacing of graphene layers and four point probe to determine the resistivity and electrical conductivity, also preparation of thin film electrodes for solar application.
